Multicast Cookbook
Here's is the presentation given at the February 2005 Joint Techs meeting.
Why a Cookbook? Here's the quick review:
Cookbook: n.
A book of directions and receipts for cooking
Recipe n.; pl.
A set of directions for preparing food from its ingredients.
A method or procedure for accomplishing a goal by defined
steps; -- implying a high probability of achieving the goal
A cookbooks contains recipes that allows one to prepare and serve "non-standard” meals. What you find here is not a replacement for existing multicast "cookbooks". You will find references to the "recipe" used by other to enable multicast deployment on their network infrastructure. This cookbook will:
- aid those deploying networks that will support multicast applications
- catalog the experiences of those who have successfully deployed
multicast across their networks
- specify the tools used and the configuration parameters used for
their network equipment
Here's workshop material where you can find the basic information required by network engineers:
. Overview
. Multicast on the LAN / SSM
. Intra-domain ASM
. Inter-domain ASM
. Troubleshooting
. SSM Revisited / Making the Case for Multicast
Here are some useful multicast pointers from:
- NLANR
- Internet2 Hands-On Multicast Workshops
- Abilene Advanced Services
Here's a look at some "recipes" for:
. Peering with Abilene -
HOWTO for Cisco, Juniper routers
. Cisco IOS information
. Enabling IP Multicast with Abilene (Cisco, Juniper routers)
Secure multicast infrastructure
. NWU - Secure Multicast Network Configuration Guide
. Matt Davy – protecting multicast-enabled networks
List of Multicast sites, references, and "looking glasses"
. Looking Glass
. Abilene Multicast Route Viewer
. MANTRA multicast monitoring
. Multicast Beacon Server
Troubleshooting Guides:
- Bill Nickless – Methodology
- UCSB – Debugging handbook
- Internet2 Workshop
Multicast tools, testers, and applications
. Java applet that tests for multicast capability
. NLANR pointers to multicast applications
. University of Memphis
. Multicast Applications
. Internet Futures Lab
. DVTS, the DVGuide, and the Videolan applications
